Hello! been awfully quiet around here recently.

Am sure most of you were on the list for the promotion from UD44 to UD48 recently. Whoever is on that should just apply. The KL side is now rather efficient so any foul up is likely to happen at your own hospital level side. I know in the office in Kota Kinabalu is HOPELESS, but in Keningau it was top notch! Still it is probably worth calling the officer in charge to make sure your forms get there and is in full order.

Not sure how you guys in Masters who are in Cuti Belajar get promoted though? will it be on hold till you graduate?

hmm... so our great Health Minister has announced that trainee doctor get post call days off... and it only applies to House Officers??? So Medical Officers are not trainee??

Well, how much would u bet that these buggers take their post call days and go do locum? kinda defeat the original purpose then wouldnt u think?

As usual, our politician has a way of shooting their mouth off without truly thinking of the consequences. So everyone get post call off, so who's left to do the work? If they are so concerned with our welfare then come out with a plan instead of just stating a blanket rule and ask the individual hospitals to carry out the orders.

Indeed, if the housemen nowadays are so mollycuddled and get all their post call days off (and this is when they are not asked to assume much responsibilities) how can they tahan when they DO NOT have post call off during MOship??

I am not against post call days off, just that I think it should be better thought out before just throwing out a blanket rule like that.

Sigh... those in government service, have you tried to introduce / change the way something is run in your department and find yourself up a brick wall? Too many procedure, ppl too comfortable with current status quo, and the need for immediate results...

If it's so difficult to bring about a small change, imagine how difficult it is going to be to change a whole country's mentality that have been ingrained by 51 years of misrule. It is not going to happen overnight, it is not going to happen without strife. The question is, will it be allowed to happen, and will we stand by it till the end, knowing that results may not be immediately seen?

51 years of garbage is a big pile. It can not be cleared overnight. And all of us must help in our small way to clear it, no excuses, if you want to live in this country, at least you can do your part to make it livable, however tedious that may be.

Tips on Filling your Vehicles...

ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR OR BIKKIE IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD.

Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening.... your litre is not exactly a litre.

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A 1 degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

WHEN YOU'RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE.

If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In low mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS IS TO FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL.

The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated, so that every litre is actually the exact amount.

ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP –

most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

n finally to ngou: true tat ane is being monopolized, worse still in um where master students r working in a n e for free.. now tat is cheap labour....

His mother did a fantastic job with a second stage of 20mins!

Kudos to a first time mother...

I was so proud of her
- no silly screaming and butt lifting acts!
She pushed well and out came a very beautiful baby.
Honestly, no palpable caput or scrunched up face!

The day ended with pride clearly seen on the father's face and relief on the mother's face.

I was back in Penang on the 8th for a funeral. I usually hate Penang traffic as it is notorious for being jammed packed. The hot and humid weather also didn't help. But surprisingly, the roads were clear, even the bridge.

On the 8th, I dreaded the funeral procession which was to depart at 12.30pm and we were heading to Batu Lancang. Can you imagine the traffic as it is just before the start of afternoon school as well as the end of morning school. What more lunch break for the working class!

Instead, the day was not hot. In fact there was a light drizzle with overcast clouds and can you believe that there was no traffic jam! I continued to enjoy 3 whole days of cool weather!

Prior to the election, my family and I use to jeer that the bad traffic condition was due to the previous CM's planning. One way streets all over. But seriously, with the new administration, roads have cleared.

Even Mother Earth is happy with the change... and who are we to argue with Mothers!

Check out our blog entries. During the first year, the entries were massive followed by a sudden drop which may be due to housemanship. Then a surge in 2005 when i think we managed to find time for normal living again. Slowly.... the numbers dropped until suddenly in March 2008, there is a flurry of activity!

If anything, at least the elections have made us a little more vocal. In fact, I'm not sure if anybody noticed, the language has also become a bit more poetic!

The cabinet ministers list out, unfortunately, many parlimentarians from east coast were negleted AGAIN, eventhough combined,they form the bulk of BN parlimentarians... and the ruling party in BN, well, they just won slightly more than 50% of total BN parlimentarians but taking 22 of 32 minister posts...to talk about fairness (eventhough we r quite lucky in the sense that certain son-in-law was not in the cabinet, yet...) Wonder if things will be different if all the other component parties in BN merge and stand up against the ruling party. Mayb then, their voices will be heard and BN can be saved and improved, or even the rakyat may root for them again. And anybody had any inkling bout our new boss?? i know he's a science graduate, MBA but nearly no working experience in private before (join and work within MCA right after graduate), but anything else?? Hopefully he can do as good as, if not better than, our prev minister.

Would like to see DAP,PKR and PAS merge one day (minus the religion,racial,wealth and status sentiments), promoting Bangsa Malaysia and fairness for all regardless of race or religion. Then, mayb they dont have to be government-in-waiting anymore, and will become the government of all Malaysians. If this day come, BN might as well bungkus,unless they do something dramatic..

Personally I think the whole show was just a charade. DAP need to act like they don't agree at first, otherwise malu. It's just a matter of who they can insult less, and whose support they are willing to forgo at this point of time. I believe everything had probably been agreed upon, but each party must put on a show to be seen to protect their and their voters own interest.

so pas had taken the mb slot, and control 3 mb in total, so pkr have on mb, and dap has one state... it is defintely a new era. hopefully everything is gonna b alrite. the bickering in perak? it is unavoidable... if dap dun make any noise at al, it gonna b worse, already some ppl r not satisfy pas taking the mb seat despite having the lowest number of seats. ... it gonna be a uphill battle for dap next election...

No major change is without its risks. No major change is without hiccups along the way. People abhor change, even when its good for them. Familiarity is comforting. Change is just so uncertain, even if gains can be made.

Stay cool everyone. Have confidence in our voice.

Demonstration against change has happened in Penang. It is their right. They may not see things as we do. Do not get upset. If the change is right everyone will benefit. In the long run even they will realise. No point fighting now, verbally or physically.

was attending a dinner at One World Hotel when results started trickling in. Beside me, Peter was sitting uneasily.Together, we were both excited and worried...why, our 'beloved' BN leaders fell like bowling pins hit by Shalin Zulkifli one by one(dats the excited part)...but worried coz... what if 513 happen again......had planned to sleep in the hotel lobby or parking lot that night..
But alls well in the end...WHEWWW!!! and thus start the new dawn for our beloved country and exciting news and development (hopefully for the better) for many days and months to come. May all the elected representatives work hard to fulfil what they had promised.

Its truly MERDEKA again for Malaysia....

new dawn

once there was a country which was dry for ages. the tribe leaders insisted that the people to be thankful for at least there are land to plant crops. the poor people was not satisfied, so they pray for rain, storm cloud gathered, and it started raining, and on the sea horizon, it was seen that tsunami wave is appearing.

indeed it was really really exciting election. plus the point that my first time voting. but the result was so exciting, it all started with a certain MP from snail river was kicked out. friends gather in front of tv to wait for result. (this remind me of world cup d)... but the media was so slow, and bias. so decided to go home, online, and shocking result was out bit by bit in malaysiakini. state by state fallen. finally at 4am decided to slept. perak had won by opposition (plus the fact tat was having prolong DOTA session with online gamers)...

colleagues still talk bout it whole day today, noone acutally could say whether the result is good or not. but still, tis is really a strong message to the government that the people is not as naive as they were years ago. 2/3 majority was broken, in some way, least there are some check and balance in power. absolute power corrupt absolutely rite! and the comin 4-5 years are crucial tat the opposition to prove their words. after all, if they screw things up, the next election would be another tsunami but towards the other election.

as for perakians, the thrill is not over yet. the mb is not decided upon... gun cheong ...

I think there is just so much that one can take and it is evident in yesterday's election. I can only hope that the PA will be able to work together to make the change. PA is made of so many different parties and I am sure they each have their own agenda. I only wish for a country which is peaceful, just and not corrupted. Do you think that is too idealistic?

I just couldnt suppress the goosebumps when results of opposition doing well started trickling in at around 7pm. Was out having dinner with my parents and nearby was a BN election centre. Walking in we saw gloomy faces and utterence of "ga liao dou!!" by the BN supporters. Hope of change was evident... little did we know this would be a political tsunami.

Went back home and switched on the TV. Results there were horrendously slow, and analysis were still biased towards the MSM. So went online. Thank god for Malaysiakini. Jaw dropped when saw DAP sweeping Penang. More surprises as Kedah fell, then shockingly Selangor and Perak as well!!

Now I wanted to make sure that BN loses its 2/3 majority. Unofficially it has been announced it will be so. But I had to make sure. Stayed up till 4am, till cannot tahan went to sleep. Next morning woke up and log on, and saw it confirmed.

The morning couldn't have been prettier in Penang that day.

So where were the rest of you last night? Do share your thoughts.

So the people have spoken, the voice of the Rakyat has screamed for change, enough is enough we say. The dust is currently settling following the most shocking results ever in Malaysian politics. Certainly a wind of change was expected, but no one, not even the opposition leaders, could have envisioned it turning into a hurricane, causing a tsunami, sending a shockwave into the very core of Malaysian democracy.

But what now?

The opposition has 5 states, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and unexpectedly Perak and Selangor. All eyes will now be turned on how they can govern the states. It is imperative that they do well, making good their promises of justice, transparency and equality for all. This 5 years will be a chance for the opposition to demonstrate that they have what it takes to govern well. A yardstick, so to speak, as to how well they could govern they country.

So this is but a new beginning, much hard work lies ahead. Run the states well and the possibility of taking over the country next election will become a real possibility.

Perhaps there is still hope for Malaysia.

Dimaklumkan bahawa Lembaga Penilaian Kompetensi Perkhidmatan Awam (LPKPA) yang bersidang pada 5 Oktober 2007 telah meluluskan permohonan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) untuk menilai taraf Ijazah Sarjana Kepakaran Pegawai Perubatan (Klinikal) dan Pegawai Pergigian (Klinikal) sebagai setaraf dengan Penilaian Tahap Kecekapan (PTK). Keputusan mengenai nilai taraf tersebut adalah seperti berikut :

2.1 Pegawai yang melepasi Peringkat 1 Program Sarjana Perubatan (Klinikal) dan Pergigian (Klinikal) dinilai taraf dengan peperiksaan PTK bagi TK1 pada Aras III (Komponen Umum dan Khusus);

One day Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was visiting Singapore.

He was having a golf match with Lee Kwan Yew, and while playing, they were discussing the reliability of their staff. Abdullah told him about his cabinet, just recently branded a half-past-six kitchen cabinet by the masses.

"You know Abdullah," says Lee. "I have a great way of telling how intelligent my Cabinet ministers are. I ask them a simple logic question, and if they get it wrong then I demote them in my next reshuffle."

"I'm interested," replies Abdullah. "I have a few staff at home who I'm not too sure about."

Lee Kwan Yew calls in Goh Chok Tong, then the prime minister of Singapore, and just like that, he came. "Allow me to demonstrate. Goh, I've got a question for you. If your father's son is not your brother, then who is he?"

"Why," replies Goh Chok Tong, "It's me of course!"

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was very impressed with this, and decided to try it out. When he got back home to Malaysia he called Najib Razak into his office.

"Najib, I've got a question for you. If you get it wrong then I'm going to fire you."

"Shoot," replies Najib confidently.

"If your father's son is not your brother then who is he?"

Oh dear. Unfortunately Najib could not manage to get his head around the problem. He stands there in silence for a few seconds, worried about his job. "Mr. Abdullah, may I please have 24 hours to think about it?"

"Okay then Najib," says Abdullah, "but if you don't get the answer by tomorrow you're out of a job."

That evening Najib was having dinner with Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, by secret of course as he doesn't want to be seen involved with his former boss, for some reason. "Tun, I've got a problem. I've got to answer a question, and if I don't get it right I'll be fired."

"What's the question?" asks Tun Dr. Mahathir.

"If your father's son is not your brother then who is he?"

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad laughs. "It's me of course!"

Therefore the next morning, Najib went to see Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"Well Najib, have you got the answer to the question yet?"

"Yes I have Mr. Abdullah! It's Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad!"

"No!" says Abdullah. "That's completely wrong. I'm afraid that you're just too stupid to be in government. I'm going to have to let you go. Instead I'll make my son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin as my advisor, he's far more intelligent than you are!"

Najib was devistated by this. However, one thing still bugged him. He wanted to know the answer to the riddle which had been the cause of his demise. "Okay then Mr. Abdullah, I'll resign. However, I have one favour to ask. Please tell me, if your father's son is not your brother, who is he?"

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi replies: "IT'S Goh Chok Tong, you IDIOT!!"

Samy and his stamps

When Samy Vellu completed 25 years of his role as a politician over M'sia, he wanted a special postage stamp issued, with his picture on it. He insisted the stamp to be of international quality. When the stamps were duly released, he began hearing complaints that the stamp was not sticking properly, and become furious. He called the chief of the Secret Service and ordered him to investigate the matter. The chief checked the matter out at several post offices, and then reported on the problem to Samy Vellu.

He said: "Sir, the stamp is really of international quality. The problem is, our citizens are spitting on the wrong side!"

Light hearted moments

One day, our esteemed PM Badawi, Najib, Samy Vellu and their cabinet ministers et al was attending a conference when their motorcade encountered a massive accident. The VIPs were rushed towards the nearest hospital for emergency care.

This being big news, the media quickly descended on the hospital for updates on our dear leaders.

They met with a haggard, tired and disappointed looking doctor outside the casualty.

The journalist clamoured, "How's our esteemed PM, doc!!!"

The doctor sighed, his face sorrowful, "I'm sad to say... we could not save him."

The newsmen were horrified, then they ask, "what about Najib, doc?"

Again the doctor sighed... "No hope."

Cries of anguished from the journalists. Some asked, "Any news on Samy then?"

The doctor, "I'm sorry, he could not be saved either."

The journalists were now despondent, they asked, "So doc? Is there anyone that can be saved??"

To which the doctor brighten up and said, "Yes! Now Malaysia can be saved!!"

When high expectations are not met

I am not aware of any "official" channel to voice your complaint. Usually the complaints will be written to the Hospital Pengarah, and take it from there. Maybe there's a complaint board in the MOH, but I don't know about that. Anyway, threaten to sue when complaining and things will move faster I guess.

Tan:
Am flying back from Sabah on May 8th, (thank god for Air Asia!) just to vote. Strange that an airliner which is closely linked to the famous son-in-law is flying me back to vote.

You know, I do agree that Malaysia has seen tremendous progress through the years, and that they are due to the government of that time. But I ask myself, did we fulfill our potential as a nation? Somehow, I feel cheated, because I feel we could have progressed so much more. And though stability is a key requisite for growth as the government has been barking for us to believe, I believe that change is needed, because we are slipping, we are becoming stagnant, and being stagnant is the worst sin of all.

No great change has ever come without great sacrifices. The freeing of the slaves in USA, the end of apartheid in South Africa, in fact our own independence! All these have occurred because people were shouting for change, and were willing to fight for it.

You call for my vote by claiming "look at my track record", "the opposition has no experience to govern". And yes, I have looked at your track record, and I am not impressed. You see, success and growth is a relative thing, you say now we are better off than Burma and Ghana. I say hogwash! With our nation's potential we should be comparing ourself to Japan and Korea. So I fail you on that count.

So the opposition has no experience? So what, can they do worse? How would I know if I don't give them a chance. And since when has any success come without its risk? After all, its only for 5 years, and if they don't do a good job I can boot them out. That is democracy.

The time is nigh, emotions are running high. Perhaps we can still save our country.

as much as i hate supportin complains, as am a medical staff myself, it was rather a unforgivable error which should not happen at the first place. anyway, it was fatal. so in the end the family was not happy things were handle as no official feedback was given at all. (usual story) all the family wanted was an explanation of how the error was done and probably an apology at least. easy way is to go to press, or take legal action but at the moment, trying out the less damaging way first. .. so the best way is to lodge an official complain.

Probably the fastest way to get your complaint heard will be to go to the media or to a politician. But I wouldn't recommend that. There was an article in the Star recently about hospital negligence being a common occurence. All of us have made mistakes in our career, haven't we? Accidentally prescribing the wrong dose of medication or underestimating the seriousness of a complaint out of ignorance? I've heard of some doctors who brush the incident off without so much as an ounce of regret and some who beat themselves up so badly for putting a patient's life in danger. The question we have to ask ourselves is, which category do we fall into? We are only human. Everybody makes mistakes but in medicine, the mistakes are unforgivable. The courage lies in how we regain our self esteem and move on.
On a different note, how are you guys in Sabah and Sarawak originally from Peninsular Malaysia, going to vote? I'm voting for the first time since the last time, I didn't register as a voter, and anyway I was in Alor Setar and couldn't take leave. The idea of setting up a polling station in the hospital for staff and patients to vote is quite good, but I suppose tedious, as voters come from so many different areas. A certain going to be ex-chief minister is running for parliament seat at my area. I ask myself, has he done anything progressive for the state during his tenure? I remember I used to like him for being a nice guy. But being nice is not enough nowadays, is it?
